Use FileOctopus instead of Finder

Turn it on in Settings ▸ General, and “Show in Finder”, “Reveal in Finder” and open -R in other apps open FileOctopus with the item selected.

Recorded in FileOctopus on demo files. No audio. Use the full-screen button to watch it larger.

How to do it

  1. Open Settings (⌘,) ▸ General.
  2. Under Default file browser, turn on Use FileOctopus instead of Finder, then choose Use FileOctopus.
  3. “Show in Finder” in other apps now opens FileOctopus with the item selected in its folder. Apps that were already open may keep using Finder until you quit and reopen them.
  4. Finder stays on your Mac: the Desktop, Finder's Dock icon and Open and Save dialogs are still Finder's. Turn the setting off to give everything back to Finder.
