Filter a long folder in place

View ▸ Filter Current Folder narrows what's already listed, without a search across subfolders.

How to do it

  1. Open a folder with many items.
  2. Choose View ▸ Filter Current Folder.
  3. Type part of a name: the listing narrows to matching items already in this folder.
  4. Nothing inside subfolders is searched, so it is instant. Use ⌘F when you want to search across folders.
