Advanced search syntax

Combine name terms with precise extension, kind, size, date, tag, path, source, and content filters.

Operator reference

OperatorExampleMeaning
ext:ext:pdfFilename extension.
kind:kind:videoFile category.
size:size:>5MBSize comparison; also <, <=, >=, and =.
mtime: / modified:mtime:<7dModified within the recent seven-day interval.
created:created:yesterdayCreation date.
in:in:ReportsPath constraint inside the active scope.
tag:tag:ReviewTag match.
from:from:githubRecorded source metadata.
content:content:"launch checklist"Content query through available content providers.

Combine terms with spaces: invoice ext:pdf size:>1MB !draft. Terms and filters are combined as AND conditions; this interface does not provide a general Boolean OR expression language.

Name matching

  • invoice: fuzzy filename term.
  • "annual report": phrase matching.
  • ^invoice: name prefix.
  • final.pdf$: name suffix.
  • !draft or -draft: exclude a name term.
  • !ext:zip: negate an extension predicate.

Quotes protect text from natural-language interpretation. Backslash can escape special characters. For an exact PDF extension, use ext:pdf; a bare .pdf is not documented here as an extension operator.

Dates and units

Supported date values include today, yesterday, ISO days such as 2026-10-01, ranges such as 2026-10-01..2026-10-10, and relative ages such as <7d or >2w. Use created: when creation time is the criterion; date: is an alias for modification time.

Size units are binary: KB/KiB, MB/MiB, GB/GiB, and TB/TiB are equivalent pairs. An explicit size value without a unit means bytes. Decimals such as size:>1.5GB are accepted.

Correct a query before acting

Every parsed metadata predicate has a chip. Unknown operator names are kept as text with a warning. Invalid values produce a diagnostic and do not add that filter. An unexpectedly broad search may therefore need a corrected operator rather than a larger scope.

in: narrows a scope; it does not authorize another folder. Content and source filters have additional availability limits described in content, OCR, and source search.
