NewGet Info, like Finder's. ⌘I shows General (size and the space it takes on disk, where it is, created, modified and last opened dates, an app's version), More Info, Name & Extension, Tags, and Sharing & Permissions. Rename an item, Hide extension, mark it Locked, or change who can read and write it, right in the window. ⌘Z undoes it. Lock and permission changes work on items you own.
NewDisk Get Info. Get Info on a disk shows its format, capacity, available space (with the space macOS can free), used space and mount point.
NewFree space in the status bar: "N items, X available", as in Finder.
NewYour sidebar, your way. Right-click a sidebar row for Open in New Tab, Open in New Window, Show in Enclosing Folder, Get Info, Rename…, Remove from Sidebar and Eject. Renaming a favorite changes only its sidebar name; Reset Name brings the original back.
NewHide a disk from the sidebar. Show it again in Settings ▸ Sidebar ▸ Hidden disks.
NewSidebar groups. Make your own with New Group…, then drag favorites in or use Move to Group. Delete a group and its favorites go back to Favorites.
NewSidebar options (off by default). In Settings ▸ Sidebar: group Locations by type (Local, External, Cloud, Network), and highlight the sidebar row that contains the folder you're in.
NewSettings ▸ Keyboard. Every menu command, grouped by menu, with its shortcut. Click one and press new keys, or add an extra key. FileOctopus tells you when a key is already used by Finder, macOS or another command. Restore Defaults puts back one row or all of them. Shortcuts you set in System Settings ▸ Keyboard ▸ App Shortcuts still come first.
NewShortcut profiles: Finder (the default), Windows Explorer, and Total Commander. Total Commander gives you F5 and F6 to copy and move to the other pane, F7 for New Folder, F8 for Move to Trash, and, if you want it, Tab to switch panes. On most Mac keyboards, hold fn for the F keys.
NewImport and export shortcuts as a file. An import is checked first: if anything is wrong you get the full list, and nothing changes.
NewMouse buttons 4 and 5 can be turned off or swapped in Settings ▸ Keyboard.
ImprovedQuick Open lists the favorites in your sidebar groups too.
ImprovedRemove from Sidebar can be undone with ⌘Z.
ImprovedThe Pane Layout button shows the layout you have: one pane, side by side, stacked or the grid.
ImprovedBatch rename shows the text it finds and the text it puts in, in bold.
ImprovedCopied, moved and trashed items appear in place with a short fade, instead of the whole folder reloading.
ImprovedBatch rename stays responsive with thousands of items: the preview updates in the background.
ImprovedSearch indexing reads the disk without holding up the rest of the app.
ImprovedText in an image or a PDF page that couldn't be read once is tried again instead of being skipped for good.
FixedAfter you renamed a file or folder, search could list it twice, under its old and its new path.
FixedA possible crash when FileOctopus opens after earlier file operations (also in 1.0.2).
FixedContent search could miss a file whose text was read again while an earlier read was waiting to retry. Reading text in images now pauses instead of retrying again and again when macOS can't read it.
FixedBatch rename's preview could disagree with what Rename did when two new names differed only in upper and lower case.
Known issue
If you go back to FileOctopus 1.0.2 or earlier and that version changes your sidebar, it drops the sidebar names, groups, hidden disks and sidebar options you set in 1.0.3. Your favorites are kept.
NewQuick Open (⌃⌘P). Type a few letters to jump to a recent folder, a sidebar favorite, an open tab or a saved workspace. Start with >, or press ⌃⇧⌘P, for the Command Palette: the menu commands available right now, with their shortcuts.
NewGo to Folder suggests as you type. ⇧⌘G and the Location Bar (⌃⌘L) list matching folders: ↑/↓ to choose, Tab to complete, Return to open.
NewGo ▸ Recent Folders, as in Finder. Press and hold Back or Forward to jump anywhere in a tab's history.
NewMerge folders. When a folder meets one with the same name, choose Merge… and see what will happen before anything changes: keep both, skip, or keep the newer item. Replaced older items go to the Trash; nothing is deleted.
NewUndo that remembers. ⌘Z works in every window, and after you quit and reopen FileOctopus (the last 20 steps, for 24 hours). Every item is checked before anything moves; if something changed, Undo tells you why instead of guessing. ⌘Z right after ⌘⌫ works, and moves from several folders (from the Shelf or search results) go back in one step.
NewSpeed and time left while copying. FileOctopus keeps your Mac awake until a copy or move finishes; the screen can still sleep.
NewPause All / Resume All, and reorder waiting operations by dragging, or with Run Next, Move Up and Move Down. (Queueing copies and moves needs PRO.)
NewProblems list. Failed items stay listed after you close the alert, with the reason, Show in FileOctopus or Finder, and Retry when trying again is safe.
NewWindows Explorer habits (optional). In Settings ▸ General: Return opens items (F2 renames), and ⌘X / ⌘V cut and move files. Both are off by default, so Finder's keys stay as they are.
NewNext / Previous Pane: ⌃⌘] and ⌃⌘[.
NewWorkspaces toolbar button. Add it with View ▸ Customize Toolbar….
ImprovedFile errors are explained in plain words with what to try next: a full disk, missing permission, a file in use, a disconnected disk or server, and more.
ImprovedA network or cloud folder that doesn't answer says so after about 10 seconds, with Try Again and Go Back.
ImprovedBig copies with thousands of files update their progress much faster.
ImprovedName matching in search is faster.
ImprovedList and Column View show a small picture of each video, as Finder does.
ImprovedVideos in the preview column, the preview pane and Gallery show a still picture until you click Play, so browsing stays quick.
ImprovedThe File Operations panel shows up to 10 operations without a scroll bar.
ImprovedHelp ▸ Contact Support shows the support address when your email links open in a web browser.
ImprovedThe copy speed and time left change at most every two seconds, so they're easy to read.
ImprovedView ▸ Customize Toolbar… and Hide Toolbar (⌥⌘T) are in the View menu, as in Finder.
FixedA crash when dragging several files in a list (also in 1.0.1).
FixedMoving files to an external drive or disk image could fail at the final check and keep the originals with an error. Programs with special permission bits now copy to such drives too.
FixedWhen your home folder is on an external drive, FileOctopus could read icons inside protected folders such as Documents without asking.
FixedWhen the folder you're viewing is deleted or moved away, the pane goes to the nearest folder that still exists and says so.
FixedWhen a drive is ejected outside FileOctopus, every window leaves it, not only the front one. Force Eject never unmounts the Mac's internal disk.
FixedPossible crashes or hangs: compressing a file that changes or is ejected while it's being zipped, very deeply nested folders, search results updating quickly, drives appearing in the sidebar while it refreshes, Quick Look from search results, and Icon View in very small panes.
FixedA damaged saved window layout could come back with broken split sizes.
FixedSome operations on items in /tmp were refused.
FixedClosing the last window with its close button and opening FileOctopus again showed a new, empty window. That window, with its tabs and split panes, now comes back, also when you click the Dock icon. Hold Shift to start with one new window instead; ⌘N always opens a new one.
FixedCopying files no longer reloads the pane showing the folder they were copied from.
FixedIn Customize Toolbar, Group, Pane Layout, Action, View, Share and Search could not be dragged back onto the toolbar once removed.
FixedIn Column View, pressing Esc while renaming no longer cancels a pending ⌘X cut.
NewPicks up where you left off. FileOctopus reopens your windows, tabs and split panes, each with its Back and Forward history. Hold Shift while it opens to start with one new window. You can turn this off in Settings ▸ General.
NewSend it to the other pane. ⌃⇧⌘C copies the selection into the other pane's folder and ⌃⇧⌘M moves it there. The pane you're working in is marked with a thin accent line.
NewBack and Forward on your mouse and trackpad. The mouse side buttons and "Swipe between pages" go Back and Forward in the pane under the pointer.
NewShow in Finder for the selection, the current folder, a path segment or a search result. ⌥⌘C with nothing selected copies the folder's path, and ⌃⌘L edits the location.
NewDropbox shows up in the sidebar next to Google Drive.
NewGroup By now matches Finder, including Application and Date Last Opened.
NewDrop targets look like Finder's. Dropping on a folder highlights it, and dropping into a list or pane outlines it.
FixedCopying downloaded files failed with "The staged payload and non-ACL metadata do not match the source." Their quarantine and source information are still kept.
FixedA crash after going Back into Column View from Tags, Recents or a search.
FixedA crash when dragging several items in Column View, and when dragging over Icon View.
FixedIn Column View, the right-click menu could disable Copy, Quick Look and Move to Trash in one pane.
FixedQuick Look now follows the pane you're working in when the window is split.
FixedRenaming looks and works the same in every view. In Column View the new name was invisible while you typed.
FixedBig copies show "Verifying…" and "Finishing…" instead of sitting at 100 %.
FixedIn a split window the search field stays with its own pane.
PRO is on sale: FileOctopus ▸ License… shows the current launch price, and Unlock PRO opens the secure Lemon Squeezy checkout. Paste the license key from your receipt email to activate.
Buy once, keep it: one-time purchase for one user on 1 Mac at a time, with lifetime updates. To move PRO to another Mac, choose Deactivate This Mac first.
Launch prices: $14.99 for the first 100 customers, $19.99 for the next 200, then $29.99.
Clearer License window: once PRO is active the key field is hidden and only Deactivate This Mac remains.
Free stays free: browsing, file operations with Undo, search and up to 2 panes per window.
Google Drive: if you use Google Drive for desktop, your Drive shows in the sidebar and under Go ▸ Google Drive, with cloud status in every view. Download Now, Remove Download and Copy Link work on selected items (bulk actions and links are PRO). Settings ▸ Cloud lists your accounts.
Eject a volume in use: like Finder, a sheet explains the volume is busy and offers Try Again or Force Eject.
Clearer copy and move progress: the panel shows Preparing…, Verifying… and Finishing…, and folder copies report real byte totals.
Simpler name-conflict sheet: it names the destination folder and shows size and date for both items, with the newer one marked.
FixedSearching from a split pane now stays in that pane instead of jumping focus.
Compress to ZIP: right-click ▸ Compress, or File ▸ Compress, like Finder. ⌘Z moves the new archive to the Trash.
Pause and resume copies and moves: Pause/Resume in the progress panel. Stop still works while paused.
Copy/move queue (PRO): start several copies or moves and they run one after another in one panel.
Column View sorts and groups like Finder: columns follow Sort By, and Group By adds Today / Yesterday / Previous 7 Days headers. The toolbar Group menu is one Finder-style list.
FixedThe sidebar showed "Trash — Permission Required". Trash now always opens; without Full Disk Access it explains why it looks empty and links to System Settings.
Much less memory: after a busy day of file changes (builds, downloads, syncing) FileOctopus no longer piles up gigabytes while it catches up. Catching up is also many times faster, and memory goes back down once it's done.
Honest search while catching up: search shows "Updating index…" when the newest changes may not be in the results yet.
Folders you never search (hidden folders like ~/Library, build folders) no longer slow the index down.
PRO trial starts by itself: FileOctopus opens with 14 days of PRO, no clicks needed. After 14 days it keeps working as Free. Buying PRO opens with version 1.0, which comes as an update.
Fixed"What's Collected…" in the usage statistics question opened a blank sheet. It now lists every anonymous event and what is never sent.
PRO is free for 14 days. Start the trial from the welcome window (choose Grid) or from Upgrade. After 14 days FileOctopus keeps working as Free. Buying PRO opens with version 1.0, which comes as an update.
Updates: when FileOctopus asks about checking for updates, choose Check Automatically to get 1.0 as soon as it ships.
