Rename many files, with a preview

Select several files and choose Rename. Replace text, add a prefix or number them, and check every new name before you rename. ⌘Z undoes it.

Recorded in FileOctopus on demo files. No audio. Use the full-screen button to watch it larger.

How to do it

  1. Select several files.
  2. Choose File ▸ Rename N Items…, or Rename… in the context menu.
  3. Choose Replace Text, Add Text or Format (name with an index, counter or date).
  4. Check every Original → New Name row in the preview. Names that are invalid or collide block Rename.
  5. Click Rename. ⌘Z puts the old names back.
